In Memphis, contractor trucks are everywhere. HVAC techs on summer emergency calls, plumbers crawling through Midtown crawl spaces, electrical crews at the new Amazon distribution facility on Lamar — they all run pickups. The question isn't whether to buy a pickup truck. The question is which one, and how much to spend.
Half-Ton, Three-Quarter-Ton, or One-Ton?
This is the first decision. It's largely about payload and towing.
Half-Ton (F-150, Silverado 1500, Ram 1500)
Payload: 1,500–2,200 lbs. Towing: up to 13,000 lbs. Best for: light tool loads, occasional material hauling, trades that carry more tools than materials. The F-150 with a 3.5L EcoBoost is a capable workhorse and easier to find used in Memphis than HD trucks. Lower maintenance cost. Easier to park on residential jobs. If your typical load is hand tools, a few hundred pounds of parts, and maybe a ladder rack, a half-ton is enough.
Three-Quarter-Ton (F-250, Silverado 2500, Ram 2500)
Payload: 2,200–3,500 lbs. Towing: up to 18,000–20,000 lbs. Best for: HVAC units on the bed, trailer with equipment, heavier material hauling. This is the most popular truck for Memphis contractors who need real working capability without stepping up to a one-ton. Available in gas (6.2L or 7.3L) or diesel (6.7L Power Stroke, Duramax). The 3/4-ton is the sweet spot for most trades.
One-Ton (F-350/450, Silverado 3500, Ram 3500)
Payload: 3,500–7,000+ lbs (dually). Towing: up to 40,000 lbs. Best for: dump beds, service bodies, equipment hauling, concrete contractors. If you're towing an equipment trailer regularly or need a dump bed, this is your truck. Higher purchase price and diesel fuel costs, but often the right tool for heavy-use contractors.
Gas vs. Diesel for Memphis Work Trucks
Gas engines (6.2L F-250, 7.3L F-250, 6.6L Silverado 2500) have lower purchase price, lower maintenance cost, and are adequate for most contractor applications. Diesel engines (6.7L Power Stroke, 6.6L Duramax, 6.7L Cummins) deliver more torque for heavy towing, better fuel economy at highway speeds, and longer engine life at high mileage — but they cost $5,000–$10,000 more to buy used and more to maintain. For most Memphis HVAC, plumbing, and electrical contractors, a gas 3/4-ton hits the right balance.
What Configurations to Look For
- →Crew cab or extended cab: crew cab is preferred if you carry a helper; extended (SuperCab) saves money and is fine for solo operators
- →Long bed vs. short bed: long bed fits more lumber and pipe; short bed is easier to park
- →Service body: if you carry lots of small parts and tools, a pre-built service body (aluminum side-compartment box) is worth the premium
- →4WD vs. 2WD: Memphis doesn't get much snow, and most job sites are paved; 2WD saves money unless you need to get into wet or unpaved lots regularly
- →Gooseneck or fifth-wheel prep: if you tow heavy equipment, look for a factory-prepped truck
What to Inspect on a Used Contractor Truck
Contractor trucks work hard. When buying used, pay attention to:
- →Bed condition: look for rust, dents from material loading, and bed liner condition
- →Frame: look underneath for rust, especially on older trucks that have been through northern winters
- →Transmission: test in all drive modes; slipping or harsh shifting is a red flag
- →Differential: listen for whining or vibration during acceleration
- →Service records: a truck with oil change records and major service documentation is worth more
- →Tires and brakes: commercial-use trucks often have harder wear on tires and rotors
