Buying a commercial vehicle in Tennessee is straightforward — but the title and registration process has a few steps that differ from personal vehicles. Get it wrong and you're driving illegally, or worse, facing liability issues if your truck is involved in an accident without proper commercial registration.
This guide covers the process for most buyers in Shelby County and the Memphis metro area. For specialty vehicles (CDL Class A, hazmat, oversize loads), consult the Tennessee Department of Safety directly.
Documents You'll Need
- →Title (or Manufacturer's Certificate of Origin for a new vehicle)
- →Completed Title Application (Form RV-F1310901)
- →Valid government-issued ID (driver's license or passport)
- →Business registration documents if registering under a business name
- →Proof of insurance meeting Tennessee commercial vehicle minimums
- →Odometer disclosure statement if vehicle is under 10 years old
- →Lien release from previous lender if the title shows a lien
- →Federal Heavy Vehicle Use Tax (Form 2290) receipt for vehicles over 55,000 lbs GVWR
Commercial vs. Standard License Plates in Tennessee
The type of plate your truck needs depends on its Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) and how it's used:
- →Under 8,000 lbs GVWR: Standard passenger plate is acceptable in Tennessee.
- →8,001–26,000 lbs GVWR (Class 3–6): Commercial registration required. Fees based on GVWR.
- →Over 26,001 lbs GVWR (Class 7–8): Commercial truck plate, may require IRP apportioned plates if traveling multiple states.
- →For-hire vs. private: Vehicles carrying goods for hire (delivery, freight) may need additional authority from the FMCSA depending on interstate vs. intrastate operation.
Registration Fees in Shelby County
Tennessee commercial vehicle registration fees are based on weight class. As of 2025, annual fees for Shelby County range from approximately $85 for a light commercial vehicle to $500+ for heavier Class 6–7 vehicles. Add county wheel tax (varies by county) and title transfer fee (approximately $13.25).
The Timeline
When you buy from a licensed dealer, the dealer submits your title paperwork to the county clerk. Tennessee issues a 30-day temporary operating permit (the paper plate in the window) while permanent plates are processed. Permanent plates typically arrive in 4–8 weeks.
Important: do not let a temporary permit expire before your permanent plates arrive. If processing is delayed, contact the county clerk's office or the dealer.
How Victory Auto Commercial Handles Title and Registration
We handle title, registration, and tag transfer in-house for every vehicle we sell. You don't need to go to the county clerk — we submit everything on your behalf. You leave with a valid 30-day temporary plate and receive your permanent plates by mail. For businesses registering under an entity name, bring your LLC or corporation paperwork.
Out-of-state buyers: we regularly sell to buyers across the Southeast and ship anywhere in the lower 48. We title in Tennessee for in-state buyers. Out-of-state buyers receive the title and handle registration in their home state. We provide all necessary documentation.
